Pelicans cannot settle gently on water. A bird this size has to run across the surface as it comes in — wings out, feet striking the water, body tilted back to brake. For a few seconds they are neither above the lake nor on it. I wanted this image to hold that in-between state. The spray, the effort, the commitment. Nothing about landing is effortless for them. That is part of what makes watching them so absorbing.

The Dalmatian pelican is among the largest flying birds in the world, and nothing about its life is light. It has to work to lift. It has to work to land. It has to work to hold its place on a lake in winter. I think that is part of why these birds have stayed with me across so many winters at Kerkini. They do not hide the effort. They do not hide the weight. The photograph is only possible because the bird is, for that fraction of a second, fully committed to the water.
