Black and white photograph of Dalmatian pelicans interacting on a misty lake at Lake Kerkini, Greece

The Kingdom of Pelicans

fine art photography from Lake Kerkini, greece

Artist’s favorites

Lake Kerkini, northern Greece. Winter. The Dalmatian pelican is one of the largest and rarest birds in Europe, and Kerkini is one of the last places where you can photograph them at this distance. I made this series in cold months, on a boat moving slowly, close enough to the birds that we were sharing the same silence. This is the only collection made entirely in my home country.

About the Location

Lake Kerkini, in northern Greece, is one of Europe’s most important wetlands and a key breeding ground for Dalmatian pelicans, among the world’s largest and rarest birds. The lake’s reflective surface and gentle winter light make it a perfect place for observing natural behavior up close. It’s a sanctuary for over 300 bird species and a symbol of Europe’s remaining wild spaces.

My Artistic Vision for This Collection

At Kerkini, I wanted to photograph the pelicans with quiet attention — not as distant wildlife, but as subjects of dignity and grace. The calm light and mirrored water allowed me to create simple, balanced compositions that highlight movement and shape.

The Kingdom of Pelicans showcases my approach to fine art wildlife photography: direct, respectful, and focused on capturing the beauty of natural behavior in its purest form, illuminated by natural light.
