Lake Kerkini, Greece 2024

The lake at the edge of light. The mountains in the distance, the shoreline holding just enough detail to anchor the frame. A single pelican moving across the water — alone, unhurried, its reflection still intact beneath it. I waited for this exact geometry: bird, reflection, horizon, sky. The photograph is quiet on purpose. It is the moment before anything begins.

The Kingdom of Pelicans is a black and white series from Lake Kerkini in northern Greece, made across multiple winters on a boat with the same fishermen and the same birds. Most photographs of wildlife today argue that what is wild is disappearing. At Kerkini, in the silence before sunrise, I do not feel loss. I feel proof. That the natural world still holds something we have forgotten how to see. That it is closer than we think. This image belongs to that proof.
