Glacier’s Song

Iceland — 2023

Location map showing Iceland

Photographing a glacier in Iceland had been on my list long before this journey began. When you stand in front of something so vast, the challenge is photographing it without the composition becoming messy.

What drew me to this scene was the structure of the ice itself. The formations carry the weight of time, shaped by pressure and movement. Every line is the result of slow, persistent forces acting over years.

At the same time, the experience carried a sense of concern. People living in the area described a steady and measurable retreat of the glacier over the years. The change is not abstract. It is visible, recorded, and increasingly difficult to ignore. This decline affects not only the landscape, but the balance of the wider environment.

From a technical perspective, my intention was to build depth and order. I chose a position that allowed the scene to unfold in layers—the melted ice in the foreground, the glacier forming the middle ground, and the bare mountain rising behind it. This structure allowed scale and atmosphere to exist together.

This photograph serves two purposes for me. One is to exist as a fine art print, intended to hold its presence within a space. The other is quieter—to acknowledge the fragility of places that appear permanent, yet are slowly changing before our eyes.

‘‘The decisive moment, as Henri Cartier-Bresson described it, arrived briefly. My role was simply to be ready.’’

‘‘What drew me to this scene was the structure of the ice itself.

The formations carry the weight of time, shaped by pressure and movement.’’
