Dawn Gathering — Limited Edition Fine Art Print from Chobe River, Botswana
Dawn Gathering
Chobe River, Botswana — 2022
I am always drawn to moments in the wild where behavior reveals connection. Few animals express this more clearly than elephants. Their bond is practical and instinctive—older members shielding the young, the group moving as one when vulnerability appears.
At the river’s edge, that order becomes visible. Before drinking, they form a tight, circular structure, guarding every direction. The formation feels ancient and deliberate. It immediately brought to mind a Roman legion—strength built through unity, protection through discipline.
Photographing a moment like this is less about technical complexity and more about restraint. When animals gather so closely, composition can unravel quickly. Bodies overlap, gestures disappear, and clarity is lost. I waited through repeated attempts until each elephant held its place—each presence readable, each role distinct. Every subject needed space to exist without weakening the whole.
This photograph deepened my respect for elephants. It reflects a simple truth: care is an action, not a symbol. Protection is shared. In the wild, survival depends on it. The message carries beyond the wild.
