The Weight of Years — Limited Edition Fine Art Print from Maasai Mara, Kenya
The Weight of Years
Maasai Mara, Kenya 2023
I always feel a deep sense of respect when I photograph elephants. There is something in their presence—and often in their gaze—that suggests calm, experience, and a form of wisdom shaped over time, passed quietly from one generation to the next.
When I work in the field, I’m always thinking about the final print. The photograph is never finished in the camera. I have a strong connection to panoramic formats, both horizontal and vertical, because they allow space for form, weight, and detail to breathe.
For this portrait, I worked with a tight composition, focusing on fragments of the elephant’s presence—the face, the tusks, the skin. The mud on the ivory and the downward gaze reinforced a sense of age and quiet authority.
Texture is essential to how I photograph elephants. Their skin, tusks, ears, and trunk hold an honesty that becomes almost sculptural in black and white. The mud grounds the image in reality. It reminds us where this animal belongs.
For me, the strongest photographs are the ones that carry emotion—images we can feel before we analyze. I believe this photograph does that.
I’m curious how it speaks to you.
