Photographing pelicans in large numbers is often challenging. When many birds share the frame, composition can quickly become crowded. At Lake Kerkini, I usually wait for moments when the scene offers order rather than noise.

On this morning, the fog shaped the photograph before I did. It was dense and persistent, removing the shoreline and the horizon entirely. The lake became a neutral surface. What remained were only the pelicans and their behavior—fishing, lifting, settling—isolated from everything else.

With the fog doing the work of reduction, my approach became equally restrained. I exposed deliberately high, allowing the mist to dominate the frame and guide the image toward a high-key result. The light was minimal, and the conditions pushed the camera to its limits, but the intention was clear from the beginning.

The fog did not last long. As it lifted, the scene became more defined and the balance slowly faded. What remained for me was the ethereal feeling of that brief moment, where motion stayed gentle and the atmosphere felt suspended.

This quiet, minimal mood is what defines the photograph for me. Do you feel that same sense of calm when you look at it?

‘‘The decisive moment, as Henri Cartier-Bresson described it, arrived briefly. My role was simply to be ready.’’

On this morning, the fog shaped the photograph before I did.
