Some emotions are difficult to show in the wild.

In places like the Maasai Mara, life moves fast and without softness. Survival comes first. And yet, even here, the bond between a mother and her cub is unmistakable. This photograph was made during a brief stage in the cub’s life—before it joined the pride, when the mother keeps her young apart, hidden, and under constant watch.

At this moment, the mother carries everything. Protection. Teaching. Responsibility. 

The mother remained close to the cub. Her awareness never settled. The surroundings demanded it. The cub stayed near her side while she absorbed everything beyond it.

Moments like this are rare and short-lived. They demand patience and readiness, but they also depend on something else: knowledge. It was made on the final morning of the trip, on the way back to camp, with little time to spare. Within the hour, we were leaving the Mara.
